Nikolay Zhelev

The first issue of the newspaper “Svoboda” marks a new stage in the journalistic activity of the Bulgarian revolutionary Lyuben Karavelov. The experience that he gained by publishing papers in different Russian and Serbian jour- nals brings him to the next logical step – his own independent journalism, aimed mainly at the Bulgarian readers in their own language. The research concentrates on how the different Slavic peoples and the Slavs as a whole are presented, what ideas for their unification are articulated – cultural, or political, or if there is some combined model. The way those ideas of the revolutionary change over time is also followed, be it during his stay in Russia or in the Serbian Principality later on.
